What We Do

At Symbol of Hope Warriors (SOHW),

We are devoted to restoring dignity, awareness, and hope among cancer patients in Kenya’s most vulnerable communities. Our mission is to reduce cancer-related stigma, raise awareness, and advocate for better healthcare access for those who often have nowhere else to turn.

We work directly within informal settlements, empowering cancer patients with knowledge and understanding of their illness so they can make informed choices about their treatment and their future.

Beyond awareness, we offer emotional, educational, and practical support — connecting members to trusted organizations, providing safe spaces for recreation and healing, and helping them access acceptable standards of care and treatment.

Our Core Beliefs

At Symbol of Hope Warriors, every goal we pursue brings us closer to a Kenya where no one faces cancer alone. We aim to heal not just the body, but the heart, the home, and the hope that cancer often tries to take away.

No one should suffer in silence or feel alone.

Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and compassion.

Everyone has the right to quality healthcare, regardless of financial status.

Founder story

Milicent Kagonga is more than a cervical cancer survivor; she is a voice of hope for thousands of women and families walking the same path she once did. She is the founder of Symbol of Hope Warriors (SOHW), a community-based organization in Kariobangi, Nairobi, dedicated to supporting cancer patients, empowering survivors, and caring for children orphaned by the disease. At just 20 years old, Milicent’s life changed forever when she was diagnosed with cervical cancer. What followed was a painful and humbling journey marked by rejection, financial struggle, and loneliness. Her marriage ended as the symptoms of her illness became too difficult for her husband to bear. Without an income, she found herself dependent on the kindness of strangers, until one compassionate woman stepped forward and funded her treatment. Through three sessions of chemotherapy, twenty-five radiotherapy treatments, and three rounds of brachytherapy, Milicent fought her way back to life, and found her calling. She often asks herself, “What if that woman hadn’t come to my aid?” That question became the seed of her mission. Out of gratitude and purpose, Milicent founded Symbol of Hope Warriors, creating a lifeline for others who face the same isolation and stigma she once endured. At SOHW, patients find food, shelter, counseling, and a community that restores dignity and hope. When cancer takes a parent, their children find love and care at Heaven’s Home, a safe haven that Milicent established to raise, educate, and nurture them. Beyond direct care, Milicent is one of Kenya’s most passionate HPV vaccine advocates. As the first mother in Kenya to have her daughter vaccinated against cervical cancer, she stands at the forefront of the movement for a cancer-free generation, determined that no child should suffer what she did. Through her strength and compassion, Milicent has turned her pain into purpose and her story into a movement, one that continues to heal, inspire, and transform lives every single day.
